ABOUT EAR SURGERY

The incidence of ear malformations is approximately 1 in 3800 newborns, of which a large percentage self-correct within a week. The rest of them who cannot self heal typically require treatment to reshape the ear to a more conventional appearance. Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure done to set prominent ears closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears.

Ear deformities are of different types, and they are separate and distinct from ear malformations—a condition wherein part of or the entire ear is missing. Early detection and taking corrective measures regarding ear deformities, typically within the first two weeks of life, can often provide excellent results without the need for surgery or invasive methods. A few examples of ear malformation are Anotia and Microtia.

Dr. Francesco Gargano, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). He is a highly trained medical professional who treats his patients with extreme compassion, and his care towards his patients is unparalleled. Using the ear surgery procedure, Dr. Francesco Gargano can reposition protruding ears, reduce ear size and reshape bends in cartilage creating a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Dr. Francesco Gargano, one of the most sought-after reconstructive surgeons in Manhattan, has successfully performed many otoplasty surgeries in New York City.

TECHNIQUES USED TO PERFORM OTOPLASTY

There are several ways that Dr. Francesco Gargano, one of the Best Plastic Surgeons in NYC, may use to perform ear surgery. One of the more common techniques involves making a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage and then sculpting the cartilage to bend it back towards the head. Non-removable sutures are often used in this to shape and sculpt the new ear. Another technique for ear surgery involves making a similar incision behind the ear and removing skin and using sutures to fold the cartilage back on itself. This technique reshapes the ear without removing any cartilage.

EAR SURGERY RECOVERY PROCESS

The recovery duration can differ among patients based on whether one or both ears have undergone the procedure, as well as the extent of the surgery. Most patients can resume their routine in approximately one week.

The patient may take pain meds during the initial few days to remain comfortable. The inflammation and bruising will decrease significantly from the second week onwards. During the first postoperative follow-up consultation at the end of week one, the surgeon will typically remove the external sutures.

IDEAL CANDIDATES FOR OTOPLASTY

An ideal candidate for otoplasty is any healthy person who is unhappy about the appearance of their misshapen, disproportionate, or bat ears. The malformation can involve the concha or the concha-masoid angle giving, in both cases, the appearance of prominent ears. If a child meets one or more of the following requirements, they can receive otoplasty to correct deformed or misshapen ears:

  • At least eight years of age with the ear cartilage fully grown and stable
  • Absence of any untreated ear infection
  • Ability to understand the surgeon’s instructions and cooperate towards a successful procedure
  • Adults, as well as teenagers, are ideal otoplasty candidates
