WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that has been refined and perfected over the years. It involves the removal of fat that remains stubbornly present despite all of the time and effort that patients have invested in their fitness and diet routines.

This procedure involves the use of a thin sterilized tube called a cannula, which is inserted into the target area. After the fat is dislodged from the surrounding tissues, it is suctioned out of the body. This shrinks the targeted areas in volume.

GOOD CANDIDATES FOR LIPOSUCTION

Patients who have been trying to get rid of those last deposits of fat that eating healthy and being active simply cannot remove are good candidates for liposuction. This procedure can be performed for patients who are in good general health prior to their scheduled session. Patients must avoid smoking in the weeks leading up to their surgery.

YOUR CONSULTATION

Scheduled consultations for liposuction involve questions for patients regarding their health. They will be asked to provide details regarding their medical history, including any medications and supplements that they are currently taking. Any allergies, pre-existing conditions, and past procedures will also be discussed.

The patient will go over their cosmetic goals, and the areas targeted for treatment will be examined. Photographs may be taken as a reference. Patients are encouraged to ask questions about the procedure. Instructions on how they can prepare for surgery will be provided.

YOUR LIPOSUCTION SESSION

First, local or general anesthesia will be administered depending on the details of the patient’s liposuction procedure. Next, a tiny incision will be made in the targeted area where the fat needs to be removed. The cannula is then inserted into the opening that was made. After the fat is dislodged, medical suction is applied to remove it. Once all the fat has been removed, the cannula is withdrawn.

LIPOSUCTION RECOVERY

After liposuction, patients can expect some minor discomfort during the early phase of the recovery period. Bruising and swelling will appear around the affected areas, but prescriptions will be provided to help with these issues. Compression garments must be worn to assist in reducing the swelling and to help the skin contour to the new dimensions of the area.

Patients can return to work after a few days with only moderate physical movements. A return to all normal activities is possible after a few weeks.

Dr. Francesco Gargano has extensively trained around the world and is committed to healing through individualized care. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. He is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Dr. Gargano received his medical degree from the Sapienza University of Rome in Italy, graduating magna cum laude. He continued his education at Sapienza University where he earned his PhD in Plastic Surgery, Human Anatomy and Dermatology, and completed his first residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.
